Choosing the Right Option: Plan-Managed vs Self-Managed vs NDIA-Managed (A Simple Decision Guide)
Choosing how your NDIS plan is managed can feel like a big decision — especially when you’re already juggling appointments, supports, and everyday life. The good news is there’s no single “right” choice for everyone. There’s simply the option that best fits your needs, capacity, and goals.
Below is a simple, warm, no-jargon guide to help NDIS participants, families and carers, and support coordinators quickly understand the differences — and feel confident about the next step.
The three plan management options (in simple terms)
1) NDIA-managed
The NDIA pays your providers directly.
What it’s like: You choose providers who are registered with the NDIS. They invoice the NDIA, and you don’t handle payments.
Often suits: People who want the least admin and are comfortable using registered providers only.
2) Plan-managed
A plan manager pays your invoices for you and helps you keep track of your budget.
What it’s like: You can usually use both registered and non-registered providers (as long as they meet NDIS requirements). Your plan manager handles invoices, payments, and budget reporting.
Often suits: People who want flexibility and support — without taking on the admin themselves.
3) Self-managed
You (or a nominee) pay providers and keep records.
What it’s like: You manage invoices, payments, and record-keeping. You can choose from the widest range of providers, including non-registered providers.
Often suits: People who want maximum control and have the time, confidence, or support to manage the admin.

A simple decision guide (3 gentle questions)
Question 1: How much admin do you want to do?
-
As little as possible — NDIA-managed or Plan-managed
-
I’m okay with admin (or I have help) — Self-managed (or Plan-managed if you want flexibility without the workload)
Question 2: Do you want access to non-registered providers?
-
Yes — Plan-managed or Self-managed
-
No / I’m happy with registered providers — NDIA-managed can work well
Question 3: Would it help to have someone keep an eye on your budget?
-
Yes, I’d like support and reporting — Plan-managed
-
No, I can track it myself — Self-managed (or NDIA-managed if you want simplicity)
Common scenarios (so you can see yourself in it)
-
“I’m overwhelmed and just want it to be easy.”NDIA-managed can be a great starting point. If you want more provider choice, plan-managed can be a supportive middle ground.
-
“I want flexibility, but I don’t want to deal with invoices.”Plan-managed is often the sweet spot — you keep choice, while someone else handles the admin.
-
“I’m organised, I like control, and I want the widest provider choice.”Self-managed may suit you — especially if you have time (or a nominee) to manage paperwork.
-
“I’m not sure yet.”You’re not alone. Many people choose plan-managed because it offers flexibility without locking you into full admin.
Can you change later?
In many cases, yes — you can request a change to how your plan is managed. If your needs, capacity, or support network changes, your plan management option can change too.
Next step: get clarity (without pressure)
If you’re still unsure, that’s completely okay. A quick conversation can often make the right option feel much clearer.
